Review Preacher

Preacher is a complex, multi-layered tv show that still needs to grow to become a true masterpiece. Created by a comedian duo (Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen) and a writer for “Breaking Bad” (Sam Catlin), the show opened very strongly with its pilot episode.

When Texas preacher Jesse Custer is inhabited by the renegade spawn of an angel and a demon, he gains the power to control people with just a word. Now Jesse, his badass ex Tulip, and his friend Cassidy (who happens to be a vampire) are thrust into a twisted battle spanning Heaven, Hell and everywhere in between.

Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen surprised everyone with this tv show, known for their comedians endeavour the duo created with Sam Catlin a violent, philosophical and intense show. The pilot was a jaw dropping endeavour setting the characters up with precision, mystery and dark humour .After this “Preacher” started to lose its grip as the episodes went on, the show’s irregularity and the presentation of too much characters without explanation or true backstory hurt the pace and the quality of the show. But the “Preacher” picked up steam and procured us with a very good final episode.

The show is based on the comic book “Preacher” but the first season serves as a prequel to the comic book. The second season will likely look more like the comic book itself. The central theme of the story is the place of religion and the relation people has with it, facing questions about the future and the demons of the past.

“Preacher” is visually stunning, with impeccable acting and some unexpected situations. Dominic Cooper is amazing as the self-doubting preacher who’s sudden power changes him, Ruth Negga impresses as his girlfriend who wants vengeance for a past crime, Joseph Gilgun is fantastic as the Irish vampire who brings a lighter tone with his self-loathing, humour and sympathy.  The side characters also elevate the show, with standout performances of W. Earl Brown as the sheriff, Tom Brooke and Anatol Yusef as the angels and always amazing Jackie Earle Haley as the richest man in town.
