Here we are Cannes is finished, another year, another festival. But like we all know it wasn’t a normal year this is the first “real” Cannes Festival in two years. We saw movie stars pass; we saw catchy movie titles. Movies were sold at the Cannes Virtual Market and this all made the festival almost look regular which is a victory on itself.
The jury this year lead by the incomparable Spike Lee( who divulged the winner at the beginning of the ceremony, bold move) chose for a very interesting list of winner. “Titane” by Julie Ducournau, the Golden Palm Winner has devised the press and spectators but not the jury, the second woman only to win the Golden Palm and the first to do it so by herself. (Jane Campion, The Piano, had to share the prize in a tie with Chen Kaige and his Farewell My Concubine). Maybe that was the point of Julie Ducournau with this real film the genre, her second feature after “Grave”. The rest of the winners are less surprisingly but none the less worthy of their awards and praises. We see films by past winners like Asghar Farhadi, Apichatpong Weerasethakul or great directors like Alamat Kusijanovic or Nadav Lapid.
In the very coveted Un Certain Regard competition, the Russian drama Unlenching the Fists by Kira Kovalenko took home the top prize. We also point out that the Belgian film Playground by Laura Wandel won the FIPRESCI Award together with Feathers by Omar El Zohairy and Drive My Car by Ryusuke Hamaguchi. And last but not least in the n the Cinéfondation Selection—which consists of 16 student films, chosen out of 1,835 entries across 490 film schools around the world—Belgium’s The Salamander Child by Théo Degen from the school INSAS won the top award.
