2016 is almost over but before we pass the torch to 2017 we decided to look back at 2016. Each contributor made a list of the best films of the year. We decided that ranking the movies would be unfair to quality of the films. Anyways discover the list of every contributor and we wish you all a happy New Year!

- Batman Vs Superman extended version: aka => Critics vs fans: As much as the critics want to portray this as pure garbage, the people with an actual brain do see why the fans like this movie. The movie made a fair amount in the box office, & it was generally accepted that the extended cut was a good movie. It slowly builds up towards the finale, while having plenty of action. While this movie does have some obviously imperfections, it still gives us a strong batman and an off the charts final battle, as well as lots of potential for spin-offs & sequels. The movie uses a lot of DC comicbook material, possibly too much of it, that’s the opinion of a lot of critics, while DC fans actually love this aspect of the movie, it makes the movie complicated, but for the fans it also makes the movie very rich in content.
- Suicide squad: aka DC bash #2 : The movie wasn’t not even released, but somehow people already described it as the worst movie of all times, while in the box office it made more money than Deadpool, more money than Dr. Strange, Captain America: Winter Soldier & Guardians of the galaxy. In short, I’d describe the movie as very fun, that’s about it. If you want to go more in details, Will Smith and Margot Robbie were strong leads in the movie, other performances were also quite fun. Overall this movie is just fun rollercoaster ride, not too complicated and I have yet to meet one of those people who somehow hated it. I’m 100% sure some people already hate Wonderwoman (2017), the movie comes out in 2017, but I’m sure it has bad reviews already.
- Captain America: Civil war: It was a heavy comic book movie year and don’t expect next couple of years to be any different. This movie is worth mentioning as it made over a 1B dollars and it’s quite fun. If it was up to me, B v S & both Civil war were good movies, but critics want to spoil all the fun, it’s only fair we also critisize Civil war as well. The movie suffers mutliple failings, the most notable one is a very weak & pointless villain, I don’t even want to go into the other failings (like the airport pretend fight). Somehow critics completely left their brains at home and this movie is an flawless masterpiece, but fact is, Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain Amerca: Winter Soldier were still far better movies with a lot less imperfections, not to mention much better villains. This movie is mostly for the die hard Marvel fans, you need to have seen the other marvel movies to enjoy this one.
- Dr. Strange: Fun origin story, introducing a fun new character for the Marvel movies. The most notable aspect of the movie: mindblowing special effects. If you’ve watched other Marvel movie, you’re pretty much obligated to watch this one, but the fun thing is, you can also start with this one and move on from there.
- Deadpool: Ironically close to a perfect movie; it’s fun, it’s interesting, it’s just spot on with the comic book counterpart. It’s a self-contained movie, there’s no need to be a comic book fan, if you want a good laugh, watch it! Ryan Reynolds is deadpool, it’s not possible representing the character any better, Ryan and the Director Tim Miller as well as the producers made the perfect Deadpool movie.
- The Witch: One of those rare original horror movies. You’d think in this age that’s not even possible, but it is! I’ll garantee you’ve never seen a movie like this one! The setting is pretty unique, you rarely see this era. The acting is convincing, and the atmosphere of the movie is great, it keeps you stuck on your seat till the end.
- 13 hours (the secret soldiers of benghazi) : I’ll start off by saying that this movie isn’t a war movie like most you encounter. It is an action movie amongst other things, but the one thing I liked about this movie: it shows all those things the news doesn’t; soldiers are not just killing machines & the war against ISIS is a lot more complicated than we imagine and it’s still going on as we speak! I feel obliged to say this because most people choose to ignore it. It’s based on a true story, for me that always adds extra value. I was pretty surprised to see Michael Bay directed this movie, its certainly one of his best movies.
- Snowden: Most people don’t really care about this brave & heroic human being, but personally I think everyone with access to a pc connected to the internet should watch this movie. It’s a good fluent movie with a good cast as well. Everyone should know what the US did and is still doing to everyone in the world!
- The conjuring 2: The reason why I liked this horror movie is fairly simple: it reminds me of the good oldschool horror movies and it’s directed & filmed in a similar manner.I’m sorry I did not watch “the Arrival”, it probably would have been in this top from what I hear.
- Hell or high water: The cast is at the top of their game in this independent movie which doesn’t falls for the usual indie story traps. Instead this modern Western delights by his well-crafted screenplay and the atmosphere created by David Mackenzie.
- Pazza gioia: A crazy Italian road movie. “Pazza gioia “combines adventure, drama, humor and two great actresses. This film will surprise the viewer by the adventures of the two main characters.
- Arrival : A truly poetic alien movie. Amy Adams performance is fantastic. It combines the great talents of director Denis Villeneuve with the exciting script of Eric Heisserer. “Arrival” takes a look at the human soul with depth and intelligence.
- Demolition: A strange film about a man who mourns the death of his wife. “Demolition” was one of the funniest features of the year with great performances by this fantastic cast.
- I Daniel Blake: The Palme d’Or at Cannes. Truly deserved for this simple but heartbreaking story of a middle aged carpenter who requires state welfare after injuring himself. A realistic film with a great cast!
- Deadpool: The film that gave fans everything they wanted and put the genre on his head which in the era of superheroes seemed impossible! Ryan Reynolds shines as the merc with a mouth and plays finally the part he was born to play.
- The Handmaiden: An erotic thriller with beautiful cinematography but more importantly a chilling atmosphere created by the master Park Chan-wook. The film criticizes the perverse and myogenic society.
- Sully: Clint Eastwood is a legend that keeps on giving. “Sully” based on the true story of the plane that landed on the Hudson River is an adrenaline rush with the action perfectly directed. The drama afterwards plays at the same level. Tom Hanks and Aaron Eckhart shine as the pilots of the plane.
- En Amount du Fleuve: A duo of brothers, who just discovered each other existents, decide to travel to the place of death of their father. This poetic Belgian film will convince you by its acting, the wonderful cinematography and the well-crafted dialogue.
- The Nice Guys: Shane Black is back with his typical buddy comedy which seems to come right out of the 70s. Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe are a fantastique duo. Angourie Rice is the revelation. « The Nice Guys” is funny, ironic and gives us the great detective film we have been waiting for!
- El abrazo de la Serpiente / Embrace of the serpent – a crazy trip through the amazon jungle. This film sticks. Amazing performance by belgian actor Jan bijvoet.
- Tony erdmann – funny. comedy of the year.
- Rogue one – strongest episode of the modern franchise. looking forward to the next.
- Weiner – documentary of the year about democratic senator involved in sexting.
- Hell or high water – a simple story about two bank-robbing brothers. very well executed.
- The handmaiden – just beautiful. amazing. Wow.

Een selectie uit de films die ik dit jaar in de cinema zag (in willekeurige volgorde):
X-men Apocalypse à Deze reeks stelt nooit teleur. Visueel spektakel, sterke acteerprestaties, maatschappelijke relevantie, drama (al zijn sommige personages meteen uit mijn geheugen gewist, maar soit). Laat maar komen.
10 Cloverfield Lane à Ik ben deze film grotendeels vergeten en dat zegt eigenlijk al genoeg (toegegeven, consumptie van geestverruimende substanties is niet altijd aan te raden voor men een film gaat zien…) Er was spanning, dat weet ik nog, maar die werd tenietgedaan door vreemde heel erg storende toonwissels. Het einde verzoop gewoon in het belachelijke.
Independence day, Resurgance à Beschamende misbruik van onze collectieve nostalgie. Een epische trailer, maar –en we hadden het kunnen weten- een absolute teleurstelling. Zelfs de meest grootschalige ontploffingen kunnen dit oppervlakkig gedrocht niet redden van de ondergang. Foei Hollywood!
Don’t breathe à Bijzonder spannende film – ondanks de vele ongeloofwaardigheden en genreclichés. De ethische ambiguïteit en ongemakkelijke sfeer maken van Don’t breathe voor mij een van de echte openbaringen van het jaar. Dit had ik niet verwacht.
Dr Strange à Marvel op automatische piloot. Ja, ze raken een aantal heel coole concepten aan. Ja er zit tempo in en leuke mopjes en alles wat je verwacht, maar de zoveelste origin story met onderontwikkelde personages liet me verder redelijk koud. Niettegenstaande een van de betere Marvelfilms van de voorbije jaren.
The Jungle book à Neen, sorry. Kon me echt niet boeien. Geef mij maar de tekenfilm.
Captain America: civil war à Wederom een goede film. Er wordt steevast geflirt met intelligente thema’s, het tempo ligt hoog met indrukwekkende special effects en geslaagde humor. Maar uiteindelijk versmelt het allemaal tot een grote Avengerserie. Ik haal deze films niet meer uit elkaar en het voelt allemaal aan als een grote opbouw naar de uitgedokterde climax (gepland voor… wat was het? 2026?)
Arrival à Ee absoluut meesterwerk. Deze film is elegant, intelligent en relevant. Prachtige beelden, pakkende acteerprestaties. Een plottwist dat mij is blijven achtervolgen. Ik had Jeremy Renner graag wat meer willen zien– topacteur en heel coole personage in de film- maar dat is het zo wat. Verder niks op aan te merken. Beste film van het jaar voor mij. Hands down.
Rogue One à Ik zal nooit een Star Wars fan zijn. Leuke films, daar niet van. Zeker Episode IV, V, VI en VII) maar Rogue One kon me bekoren. Je kan het mits voorkennis die iedereen wel heeft (let’s be honest) plaatsen in de chronologie en weet dus waar dit naartoe gaat. Daardoor is de opbouw heel doeltreffend. Rogue One heeft wat tijd nodig om in gang te schieten, maar het crescendo is fenomenaal. De finale is perfect en de vlotte overgang naar A New Hope is magistraal.
Op de Kinepolis Halloween Night:
Ouija: Origin of Evil à Opeenstapeling van genreclichés. Niet slecht per se, maar niets opmerkelijks aan.
Last train to Busan à een zeer frisse verrassing. Een mix tussen Snowpiercer en 28 Weeks later. Voor een zombiefilm veel te weinig bloed en goor naar mijn goesting, maar de achterliggende boodschap en melancholie maken dat allemaal goed.
The windmill massacre à Hollandse productie met zeer vreemde toonwissels. Ik wist soms niet goed of ik moest walgen of lachen. Deze film miste richting en consistentie, maar het kon me wel bekoren.
Op de Knack Focus filmdag:
Paterson à Zeer fijne film. In essentie ontzettend traag en onbenullig, maar dat maakt het ook zo sfeervol en aangenaam. Mooie feel good.
The Salesman à knappe film. Meer aan de zware kant (zeker zo op een zondag voormiddag) maar ontegensprekelijk sterk in elkaar gestoken.
Baccalauréat à Dit ontgaat me. Wordt overal vol lof onthaald. Het zal aan mij liggen.
Jackie à Mooi en interessant portret. Altijd een plezier om mevrouw Portman aan het werk te zien.
Home à Inderdaad, het gedrag van moeilijke tieners is in deze film op sommige momenten bijzonder scherp uitgebeeld. Fien Troch heeft er ongetwijfeld ervaring mee of heeft die wereld in ieder geval minutieus geobserveerd en ze heeft de radeloosheid van ouders en vrienden in een sfeervolle en intense film gegoten. Dit gezegd zijnde. Het gaat absoluut nergens naartoe en steekt vol choquerende fragmenten die naar mijn mening weinig bijbrengen. Hou u de komende weken alvast klaar voor de Vlaamsche hypemachine.
Deze films zag ik op netflix, op het vliegtuig of op DVD:
Zootopia à Disney/Pixar levert wat we van hen gewend zijn. Waanzinning knap gedetailleerde animatie. Een opeenstapeling van gags en een moralistisch verhaaltje dat jong en oud zal bekoren.
The Nice guys à misdaadkomedie in de jaren ’70 met Ryan Gosling en Russel Crowe. Neem deze dolle rit niet au sérieux. Just enjoy the ride.
Midnight special à Dank u Stanley voor deze aanrader! Zeer intrigerende en spannende scifi-mysterie. Na Mud enTake Shelter en nu dit is het voor mij duidelijk. Jeff Nichols is een van de grote hedendaagse regisseurs.
Demolition à Jake Gyllenhaal geniet er klaarblijkelijk van om mee te werken aan dit type films. Beetje mindfuck, moeilijk te omschrijven, zeker en vast bizar en ongemakkelijk. Ik heb niet de pretentie om te beweren dat ik alles heb verstaan (al was het ni zo erg als bij Enemy), maar ik heb er in ieder geval van genoten.
Anomalisa à diepdroevige doch hartverwarmende film die enkele dagen in mijn hoofd is blijven spoken. Ik had Stanley een volwaardige review beloofd en die komt er zeker nog aan.
Films die ik niet heb gezien maar wel op m’n lijst stonden:
Ma vie de courgette à zag er zo ontzettend schattig uit, wil ik zeer spoedig bekijken.
Sausage party à I love me some Seth Rogen.
