“Pilgrimage” is a Medieval story set in Ireland with a stellar cast but a uninteresting premise and execution.
Ireland, 1209. A small group of monks begin a reluctant pilgrimage across an island torn between centuries of tribal warfare and the growing power of Norman invaders. As they escort their monastery’s holiest relic to Rome, the true value of the bejeweled relic becomes dangerously apparent and their path becomes increasingly fraught with danger.
Brendan Muldowney (“Love Eternal”,” Savage”), like so many others before, sets a gritty and dark tone for this Medieval story. The cheap violence, the sluggish dialogues and uninteresting story about a vague relic they have to transport supported by a strong religious message make for a uninspiring movie.
The landscape is gorgeous, shot in Ireland and Belgium, this films uses his background beautifully.
The cast is impressive with Tom Holland, Jon Bernthal, John Lynch and Richard Armitage in the leading roles. But even an impressive turn by Jon Bernthal cannot save this film.
