Benedict Cumberbatch is the new sorcerer we have all waited for. Starting as an arrogant and brilliant surgeon we follow his journey which lead him to become a slightly less arrogant but still brilliant sorcerer. The newest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a charismatic one.
A disgraced former surgeon named Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) becomes a powerful sorcerer under the tutelage of a mystic known as the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton).
Scott Derrickson (“Sinister”) has always been a big fan of Doctor Strange, at his audition (yes directors have to audition too) he spend a considerable amount of money in a video to convince Marvel to hire him, by designing huge set-pieces which ended up in the film. Coming of a string of success in the Horror genre Derrickson had the knowledge on how to direct the weird, the mystic and even the action. The film is beautifully shot. The action pieces impress, combining the visuals of “Harry Potter” with “Inception”. Even though the film starts slowly it still entertains because of the charismatic performance of Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams and Chiwetel Ejiofor. Mads Mikkelsen, sadly, has the typical bad guy role in the Marvel Universe which is almost never impressive.
The story of the film is the classical superhero origin story, creating a sense of déja-vu, thankfully thanks to the incredible set pieces, the comedy and performances, this very weird movie entertains from beginning to end.
