TV-Review Chernobyl

One of the greatest disaster in humankind history is getting the HBO treatment. A mini-series of 5 episodes, each lasting more then an hour.

Brave men and women act heroically to mitigate catastrophic damage when the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant suffers a nuclear accident on April 26, 1986.

Craig Mazin (« Hangover part II », « Identity Thief”) is the very unlikely creator of this masterpiece. After writing comedies for the last ten year, Mazin wrote one of the most horrifying shows in history. The detailed account, the precision, the casting, the atmosphere everything is perfect. Combining not only the main characters who try to fix the problems but also the ‘normal’ people affected by the crisis. This show terrorizes without real tangible monsters. Johan Renck, who directs every episode, creates a horrifying atmosphere, making you understand that hope has left the moment you decided to watch. And still, there is hope in mankind, because the show is about the people who not only saved the Soviet Union but the rest of the Continent. About sacrifice, about real life heroes, saving millions of life by sacrificing themselves for the common good.

The makers even made a podcast to explain their choices and the historic truths and the creative licensing they took.

Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgård, Emily Watson are the three main characters of the show. The three are remarkable in their role, showing depth in their characterisations their characters. We also have to congratulate all the other actor, beautifully cast in their respective roles.
